Council Tax can be a significant expense, but there are ways to make it more manageable! Here’s a breakdown:

What is Council Tax?

It’s a local tax you pay to your council that helps fund local services like rubbish collection, libraries, and roads.

Could your council tax band be wrong?

Check your Council Tax band: Your property’s band determines how much you pay. If similar homes nearby are in a lower band, you might be overpaying. You can challenge your band with the Valuation Office Agency (details below). Be aware: They could raise your band too!

Discounts:

  • Single person discount: 25% off if you live alone (or with someone “disregarded” like a student).
  • Disability reduction: If you or someone you live with is disabled and your home has been adapted for their needs, you could get your Council Tax lowered to the next band down. For the lowest band (Band A), it’s a 17% reduction.
  • Low-income reduction: If money is tight and you have less than £16,000 in savings, you might be able to reduce your bill by up to 100%. It depends on income, benefits, and household members.
  • Additional homes: Temporary discounts for empty second homes.
  • Annexes: 50% discount for annexes used by family.

Who doesn’t count?

These people living with you might not affect your bill:

  • Young people (under 18), some 18-19 year olds, and full-time students.
  • People with severe mental impairments – Those with permanent mental health conditions (like dementia) may be fully exempt if they live alone.
  • People in long-term care, hospitals, hostels, or prison.
  • Ukrainian citizens in the “Homes for Ukraine” program – If you’re hosting someone from Ukraine under this program, they won’t count towards your Council Tax.

Help for Lowering Household Bills

If Council Tax discounts aren’t an option, there might be other ways to ease your budget. Some councils and charities offer help with other household bills or services, so it’s worth asking around if you’re finding it hard to keep up.

Also:

Review your bill: Double-check for any discounts you might be missing.
Remember: Discounts are sometimes automatic, but not always. Taking action could save you money,
